What Extended Producer Responsibility actually means
EPR shifts the cost of end-of-life disposal — recycling, waste handling — onto the companies that put products on the market, rather than local governments. In practice, that means sellers register with national schemes and pay fees tied to what they sell, so the packaging and materials get properly processed once a customer is done with them.
WEEE — for anything electronic
If a product has a plug, a battery, or a circuit board, it likely falls under Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) registration. This covers everything from headphones to kitchen gadgets — a much wider category than most sellers assume.
Battery registration — separate from WEEE
Products containing batteries, even removable ones, often need their own battery EPR registration on top of WEEE. It's a common gap: sellers register for WEEE and assume they're covered, when the battery scheme is a distinct requirement.
Packaging EPR — the one that touches everyone
Unlike WEEE and batteries, packaging EPR applies broadly — if you ship a product in a box, bag, or protective material into an EU country, you likely owe packaging registration there, regardless of what the product itself is.
How Amazon enforces it
Several EU marketplaces now require proof of EPR registration numbers before a listing can go live, and Amazon has been steadily expanding which categories and countries this applies to. A missing registration number is often the actual reason behind a listing that "won't publish" for no obvious reason.
